A note from Laura Taylor about taxes.
(This was an email from Laura that everyone should see)
Subject: tax obligations for conpensation
I am an Arizona Downwinder and have been awarded $50,000 but we have also filed for my mother who
passed away with Lung cancer in 2002. It is my understanding that if you are
the person with the compensatory illness you are not required to pay taxes
but if you are the heirs then you are. Can you shed some light on this?
Regards,
Carol Horn
For income tax purposes, any compassionate payment awarded under the
Radiation Exposure Compensation Act is not included in gross income,
no matter who receives the payment (heir of victim or victim).
