I am a Mohave County Downwinder!!

Re: Fallout of the 1950's - 1992 in Mohave County and Las Vegas, Nev.

My name is Oltea Dusek. I had uterine cancer in the year of 2000, and then I had breast cancer in 2002 and presently on chemo.

In the summer of 1957 we lived in Las Vegas while my husband was a civilian worker on the Nellis A.F.B. One day while working on the jets outside, what they thought was a storm coming up caused the workers to covered everything and go inside. It got so dark, as dusk in the middle of the day. This turned out not to be a storm.

We lived in the city of Las Vegas and that day the children were playing outside, when I saw this storm coming and brought them in. The dark cloud blew over and nothing more was thought about it.

This happen several times that summer. When school had started my son was in the 2nd grade, he came home saying that the teacher would not let them out to recess, because the strange storm cloud coming.

In October of 1957, we move to Mohave County in Arizona, 10 miles north of Wikieup, Arizona. We did not have Interstate Highway 40 then, only a narrow road South Highway 93 over the foothills of the Hualapais Mountains.

I was on my way to Kingman as I topped the mountain grade; the biggest black cloud was over the north area of Kingman. Thinking, I better hurry with my shopping before the storm hit and get back home the sixty miles.

Too many sighting of the same type of storm cloud arise, which was quite often. Little did we know this was not a storm .Until the radio news announces this was from the test site! We still were told then it was safe!! If only we would had known !

My precious husband has every illness possible from 1968-1998 when he passed away.

I thank you for taking time to get the Mohave Downwinders together. This is much needed to help get messages out about the Mushrooms clouds filled with radiation. I would like to be part of your group.

Sincerely Yours,
Oleta Dusek
Kingman, Arizona
